When a pool pro or a store clerk suggests a preventative algaecide (like our No Mor Problems®), some customers hesitate. They look at the bottle and think, “Why should I spend money on a problem I don’t have yet? Isn’t chlorine enough?”

The Science: Growth Rate vs. Kill Rate
Why does this happen? Why isn’t chlorine always enough?
It comes down to a battle between two speeds: the Growth Rate of the algae versus the Kill Rate of your sanitizer.
In a perfect world, chlorine kills algae faster than it reproduces. But pools are rarely perfect.
- High Temperatures: In the Sunbelt, warm water increases algal metabolic rates.
- High Swimmer Load: Lots of swimmers in the pool mean lots of sweat and sunblock which uses up some of your sanitizer.
- Biofilm: Algae hides in plumbing, protected from chlorine.
When these factors combine, the Growth Rate overtakes the Kill Rate. The moment that line is crossed, your pool turns green—even if you have chlorine in the water.
The Preventative Advantage
Preventative algaecides (or “algistats”) change the math. They act as a force multiplier for your chlorine.
By adding a small maintenance dose of a surfactant-based algaecide, you suppress the Growth Rate. You make it harder for algae to reproduce and harder for them to build their protective slime layers (biofilm).
This creates a Safety Buffer. It ensures that even if your chlorine dips low (maybe you forgot to add tabs, or the salt cell turned off), the algae cannot take hold fast enough to cause a bloom.
Asset Management: Protecting the Surface

When a pool turns green, and you have to “nuke” it with high doses of chlorine and acid, you stress the pool surface.
- Aggressive shock treatments can bleach vinyl liners.
